Conversations with Cassie: Episode 1 - Dianna of Pine + Quill

Meet Diana, Owner of Pine + Quill in West Chester

One of the things I love most about West Chester is getting to know the people behind our local businesses. Recently, I had the chance to talk with Dianna, owner of Pine + Quill to learn more about her journey and her store.

Located in the heart of downtown West Chester, Pine + Quill is a beautiful shop filled with gifts, home décor, vintage furniture, artwork, and unique finds you won't see anywhere else. But behind the beautiful displays is a story that many visitors may not know.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Pine + Quill reflects two of Dianna's passions. Before opening the store, she spent years practicing calligraphy and originally envisioned selling her own handmade creations. While the business has evolved over time, the "Quill" remains a nod to those artistic beginnings. The "Pine" comes from her love of vintage furniture, which continues to be a major part of the store today.

Why West Chester?

When it came time to choose a location, Dianna researched communities throughout the area. Ultimately, West Chester felt like home.

Having grown up nearby, she watched the borough transform over the years into the vibrant destination it is today. She saw an opportunity to become part of that growth and contribute to the unique character that makes downtown West Chester so special.

A Store Full of Local Talent

One of the things that makes Pine + Quill stand out is its variety. Visitors will find everything from candles and home accessories to vintage furniture and locally created artwork.

Diana works with numerous local artists, showcasing their work throughout the store while also personally sourcing many of the vintage pieces that have become a signature part of the Pine + Quill experience.

Customer Favorites

If you've visited Pine + Quill before, you've probably seen one of the store's most popular items: Geometry tea towels. According to Diana, they remain a customer favorite year after year. The store's candle collection is another staple that keeps shoppers coming back.

The Rewards and Challenges of Business Ownership

Like many small business owners, Dianna wears a lot of hats. While running a retail business often means long hours, weekends, and holidays, she appreciates the flexibility it provides and the ability to be present for her daughter.

When asked about the biggest challenge of business ownership, her answer came quickly: staffing. Finding dedicated team members who share a passion for the brand can be one of the most difficult parts of operating a retail business.

Making a Lasting Impact

Perhaps the moment that made Dianna most proud wasn't tied to sales or growth, but to the connections she's built with customers.

Recently, visitors from South Jersey and even Florida stopped by the store and shared that Pine + Quill is a destination they make a point to visit whenever they're in the area. Hearing those stories reminded her that the store has become more than just a retail shop.

A Surprising Fun Fact

One thing customers may never guess about Dianna? Before becoming a business owner, she played bass guitar in a punk rock band.

As a teenager, she traveled across the country, recorded three albums, and performed in major cities throughout the United States. It's a surprising chapter in her story and one that always gets a great reaction.

Looking Ahead

While Pine + Quill continues to thrive in West Chester, Dianna has her sights set on the future. She dreams of opening a second location someday, though she says it would need to be the right town, the right building, and the right opportunity.

For now, Pine + Quill remains her flagship store and an important part of downtown West Chester's shopping scene.

If you haven't visited yet, stop by and explore the collection for yourself. You may discover a unique piece for your home, a thoughtful gift, or even hear one of Diana's many stories along the way.
